Lan generally plays an aggressive behind-the-baseline game founded on heavy groundstrokes. He is known for his running shots which he takes early and often turn into winners. Lan's strength is his aggressive baseline play which complements his offensive mentality. Towards the end of 2010, a wrist injury forced Lan to play a more defensive game in contrast to his explosive nature. This has reduced his number of unforced errors and allowed him to play a very consistent baseline game. Lan is also known for playing on the edge of his emotions, sometimes losing his temper and smashing racquets on court.
